Synopsis
This social romantic satire delightfully reflects its era, as three doctors pursue three hard-to-get beauties in the "go-go-go" era of the 70’s. Danny Lee was just at the beginning of his extraordinarily diverse career when he led Liu Lu-hua and Liu Shang-chien on an ever-challenging, sometimes frustrating but always funny, pursuit of the lovely Hsiao Yao, sexy Niu Niu, and sweet Chen Szu-chia. This bright, entertaining film proves that the road to true love may not be smooth, but it is always worth traveling… and enjoying.

Mou Tun-Fei directed or co-directed 8 films for the Shaw Brothers studio with 2 of them being Anthology films.
If you know anything about the director, Melody of Love is not a film that has anything to do with the subject matter that his other films share. Mou Tun-Fei was interested in making dark, gritty, violent and sexual provocative films.
This film is about the romantic misadventures of three men in pursuit of the three daughters of a wealthy man. It seems like the girls' father and the men hospital chief are in cahoots to play matchmaker.
It's a lighthearted film with some slapstick and at times, mean spirited pranks. Unfortunately, it's not very good as it relies in romantic cliches and tropes and the best way to put it, is a film of that time period and setting.
Watched in Mandarin with English subtitles
This is #2 out 14 Mou Tun-Fei film.

Review by hotsake ★★½
Stupid and not very funny. Also, I knew how the movie would turn out within the first 5 minutes. If any of the leads from either side was at least likable this would've been more fun. Lastly, a surprising amount of the pranks in the film were mean-spirited.

Review by Tom Cunliffe ★★½
An oddball film in the even odder career of Mou Tun-fei, a director who started out making independent Taiwan films before moving to work at the Shaw Brothers and then becoming famous for exploitation films. Unlike his incredibly dark wuxia film A Deadly Secret that he made at Shaw Brothers which bore his distinctive stamp, Melody of Love bears only the stamp of the Shaw Brothers and could have been made by any director. Basically a series of comic sketches strung together in a very loose narrative about 3 male doctors chasing after 3 ladies. Comic hi jinx ensue when the ladies constantly thwart their plans and turn the tables on them, often resulting in injuries and pain for the…

Shaw Brothers reward Mou with a solo directorial credit by giving him an atrocious, unfunny, sexist romantic comedy. Yay... It's tropes and clichés and stereotypes and gender buffoonery layered all atop of one another without any sense of originality except the attempt to make it barely watchable in terms of visual conventions, but even Mou, restricted still from achieving anything found in his Taiwan features, cannot salvage much from such banality.
